On Friday, May 10th, instructors from America's Best Defense Martial Arts in Norwich, Connecticut performed for an assembly at Sayles Elementary School in Baltic, CT.
Sensei Charlie McShane, Mr. Angel Ayala, and Mr. X gave a presentation called "Focus & Respect for a K-8 audience of over 340 children. The group was well behaved and attentive as they were led through some basic self-defense.
The "Focus & Respect" presentation, created by Sensei McShane and delivered in schools throughout Norwich, Baltic, Taftville, Bozrah, Preston, Ledyard, and Montville, Connecticut, deals with the qualities necessary to being a good student, both at the dojo and at school. Students are taken through a number of exercises to help illustrate these qualities and standout performers are asked to demonstrate in front of the entire school. At the end, three Baltic students were able to break boards in front of the entire school. Finally, the children were given a challenge - to maintain proper focus and respect for the rest of the day, week, month, and school year.
Sensei McShane's last "Focus & Respect" presentation at Sayles was over ten years ago.
Sayles Principal, Ms. Wierzbinski, said she enjoyed the presentation and even used some of the karate commands ("Set position!") to send the children back to their classrooms.
